V-Portal Router

Monday, January 21st, 2008

With the close of legal issues, Vonage is now moving ahead, able to focus more on product development and other important projects. One of the first products that has come out is the V-Portal router.

Until now, Vonage has used and sold routers from Motorola and Cisco. With the development of their own router, Vonage is now able to increase customer service and usability. Sold for only $9.99 (after rebates), the new V-Portal router is very affordable and convenient.

An interesting feature the V-Portal router is that, unlike other routers, it has a screen which displays problems that the router might me experiencing. Now instead of trying to decode and understand confusing lighting schemes, your router will just simply tell you what’s wrong when a problem presents itself.

The V-Portal is a new kind of router designed for easier use and higher compatibility and reliability.

Legal Wrap-up

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

With the settlement of Nortel, Vonage has cleared the list of lawsuits primarily focused on patent infringement. They have been involved in a lawsuits since mid 2006.

Verizon was the first to claim patent infringement. Vonage acknowledged the lawsuit on June 19, 2006. Verizon claimed infringement on 7 patents, but Vonage was ultimately charged with only 3 of them. The lawsuit was grueling and the original settlement was crushing. Appealed by Vonage, a much lighter verdict was later reached allowing the company to push on.

AT&T also sued Vonage for patent infringement. Although not quite as painful a lawsuit, it still took much focus away from current company projects to continue growth. Not long after the settlement of the AT&T suit, Sprint took the opportunity to get in a few punches. Even bankrupted SunRocket tried to sue for issues concerning their abandoned customer list. Nortel was the last suit.

After clearing out all of these lawsuits, the company is ready to move on and has already released several new products and services. Even through all the rough water, Vonage’s customer base has grown considerably, but not quite as much as hoped for.

Vonage chairman Jeffrey Citron stated that the suits were just a successful strategy to slow Vonage down. With all the smoke cleared, Citron says that Vonage will be able to come out with new features and capabilities every few months.

Nortel Settlement

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Vonage and Nortel have come to an agreement settling their lawsuit concerning patent infringement. The suit with Nortel is the last on Vonage’s list. Closing out this last lawsuit, Vonage has a clean slate and big plans. It looks like the company will increase in productivity and focus more on important internal goals.

The Vonage-Nortel suit wrapped up rather nicely. Neither side had to produce a monetary settlement therefore not causing damage to either company. As a matter of fact, both companies stock went up 11 cents shortly after the settlement.

The settlement itself declares that Vonage and Nortel will share the rights to certain patents. Vonage and Nortel will each share the rights to 3 patents. Presumably a good move for both companies, Vonage feels like they will be able to move forward with important projects without further delay.
